What is a Bunion?

A Bunion is the movement of the great toe toward the second toe with a “bump on the bone” appearing on the inside of the foot.

Most people believe that shoes cause bunions.  Shoes do not cause bunions buy may hasten their appearance at an earlier age.  Approximately 90% of bunion deformities are inherited.

Normally, a bunion deformity is a progressive problem.  The longer it exists, the more the great toes move toward the second toe and the larger the bump becomes.  Besides being unattractive, bunions, left untreated, can cause hammertoes of the other toes, corns, callouses, arthritis of joint and chronic discomfort.

What causes bunions?

Bunions can be caused by

  •  Hereditary tendency

  •  Foot injury

  •  Neuromuscular disorder

  •  Congenital deformity ( deformity that is present at birth)

  •  Loose joint movement

  •  Poorly fitting shoes

How do bunions develop?

Most bunions form as the big toe responds to abnormal pressure on foot joints.  For example, your foot may roll excessively inward during walking.  Over time, this stress may cause the big toe to move toward the other toes.  This, in turn, pushes the big toe joint outward.  In addition to the foot problems listed above, bunions may also develop along with inflammatory joint diseases such as osteoarthritis.
